Alastair Buchan is painter in thickly-applied oils. His imagined scenes emerge exist somewhere between the light and the darkness, somewhere between joy and despair where the relationship of form, symbol and colour is at its most meaningful, symbolic and and delicate. He approaches the canvas without preconceived notions of outcome: a piece might begin by following then drying lines left by a thin burnt umber ground or with a few random gestures. The paint must always be in control of the picture. In removing as much as possible the obstacle of deliberate self-expression, he hopes to clear the way for something authentic and alive to emerge.

His influences include many of the 20th century's masters of colour, form and Texture, including Chaïm Soutine, Theodore Major, Constant Permeke, Frank Auerbach and Sheila Fell. Originally from Manchester, he now lives and works near Inveraray on the shores of Loch Fyne in Argyll, Scotland.
